Summer is coming and I'm reminded of a long-forgotten favorite quote.

If you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, you have learned how to live.
[Lin Yutang]

This is going to be my short-term goal.
Useless afternoons.
Useless manners.

Because, in the end, spending useless afternoons in perfectly useless manners, is what matters most.

Let me know some of your favorite ways to spend a useless afternoon.

  1. Useless afternoons? I love spending useless afternoons wandering around in new places or sitting by the pool and reading. Just enjoying with no urgency and no agenda. Enjoy those useless afternoons!

  2. Our blogs touch on the joys of summer. My useless summers will be on my dock or my screen porch enjoying the view that I miss during the school year. Happy Saturday friend!

  3. I love the idea of useless afternoons but I know already I'll be terrible at it. I say that but maybe once the season changes next week this will feel normal again. I hope to read, play games and just let the girls let me know what they want to do.

  4. Busy times mean few "useless afternoons", but this weekend is different. I'm planning a lot of useless hours, which means I'll be reading mostly. That isn't exactly "useless", I know, but I have no other tasks that are must do's, a good thing. My idea of really useless is also fun, and it's watching the squirrels. Thanks for the query, Ruth. I'll watch for more!

  5. Long live useless afternoons! My summer useless afternoons are spent at my sister's pool, and I cannot wait! Megan may be coming to All Write with me - I can't wait to introduce you to her! Fingers crossed!

  6. Actually, yesterday afternoon we didn't do much. We were out, got home, and the kids just played upstairs for a bit. We went for a walk - they were on their electric scooters. I made myself a salad with leftover stuff from the day before, one kid had other leftovers, another had a grilled cheese. Chad did laundry. I finished an audiobook I'd been listening to. It was just down time and it was lovely. :)

  8. Reading a book... sipping sweet tea with lemon... just sitting and listening, to a friend, to the outdoors, to music

  9. I agree with Leigh Anne. "Long live useless afternoons!" In reality useless afternoons are really among my most useful ones because they revive me.
