ruth + andy = 13 years (soLs)

Today we have been married thirteen years. It's easy to think about everything that's changed, but I wanted to take a moment to remember the things that have stayed the same. It has been a challenge to generate a list of sameness. Life is so much different than it was 13 years ago.

But there is this.

He has these eyes, smokey gray, but sometimes green, blue, hazel, light, or dark. Their color change is expected. It was the first thing I loved about him. Those chameleon eyes.

It is their change that is steadfast. In their change, I am secure. It makes me wonder if maybe the same is true for our marriage. Change is constant and expected. Things won't be just as they are in another thirteen years.

Except for this.

We're together. Forever and ever.

  2. Wonderful! You are together and that is steadfast through all the changes. That was a nice analogy with Andy's eyes. Happy Anniversary!

  3. Happy Anniversary! What a nice way to think about your years together. I like the thought of what has stayed the same. It often seems like things change so fast; children grow, technology changes, our thoughts change. It's nice to think of something that hangs in there for the long haul. I hope you enjoyed some time together today!

  7. Congratulations, Ruth! It's a cliche to say that nothing ever stays the same, but your partner and the life you've built becomes your true compass. You shift course when needed, adjust speed, unfurl the sail when needed....but you always have a partner to help gauge the direction of the wind...or raise the alarm when there isn't. It's hard work, granted, But security and comfort, too. I hope you have a happy, happy celebration planned for this special day.

  8. Wow - that was beautiful. "Chameleon eyes"- the tie into that and the expected change in life except for the constant of your togetherness was so touching. Wishing you and yours many happy years to come.

  14. I love how you describe this. I just hit 19 years myself, and it is so true. Change is the constant - that and love.

  15. Wow, I think I'm about to get sick. Seriously, there were a few cookies in the break room that I've been trying to resist all morning, but now I'll be happy if I feel up to eating again by supper. Thanks for that. Oh, and call your brother he would like to hear from you every once in a while.
