homebodies (soLs)

My favorite way to spend spring break is at home. I mean this. I. Love. Being. Home. Seriously. Yesterday, though, I was feeling a little guilty about staying home. You know how it goes, your brain starts stirring all these things you should be doing and suddenly you start believing that maybe you should be visiting great grandparents or running errands or taking the kids to play putt-putt golf.

Then I looked at the kids. They were so happy, so content. "Do you guys want to go do something?" I ask.

Three heads turn my way. Three confused faces. Three simultaneous responses.

"Do we have to?"
"Not really."
"No!"

"That's what I was thinking too," I said, smiling.

Three days we've stayed home. Three glorious days. Here's a little glimpse of the things we do.

  • Play pioneer in the backyard
  • Art: drawing, painting, play-dough, coloring, and weaving
  • Build train tracks
  • Design a marble run from the top of the stairs, across the living room, to the fireplace
  • Read
  • Organize and rearrange furniture in three different rooms
  • Ride bikes
  • Go for walks
  • Bake and ice 5 dozen Easter sugar cookies
  • Cook
  • Eat
  • Play on the swing set
  • Go for runs (me)
  • Play softball
  • Dress up and put on an original play
  • Legos
  • Sleep-in
  • Stay up late reading
  • Easter egg hunts
  • Write books (or chapters of books since I doubt you get an extension for the extension of a deadline)
  • Collect in writers' notebooks
Today we took Steph to softball practice, ran to the grocery store, and then went to the pool. Simple things, really, and they were fun. But when we got home, Sam said, "I'm so glad to be home!"

I hope they always like being home.

  1. Ahhh, me too. I loved that you played "pioneer" during break. It flashed to a memory of my sisters and I doing the same thing. It all started when I read Caddie Woodlawn...

    1. There was a BIG discussion today about what to use for a covered wagon. Sam insisted on the Radio Flyer and Steph insisted on making it covered. They both agreed that Hannah should be the horse. Poor Hannah!

  11. When you get to create, just be, move in the fresh air, and eat cookies - home is the best place to be. Sam's statement puts a stamp on it.
